The
Gondwana geological society with its headquarters at
Nagpur
was established in 1981 and is now a premier earth science society
with national level status. The
society with national level status. The society named after
erstwhile Gond kingdom which had its headquarters at
Nagpur
deals with all disciplines and subdisiplines that fall under the
category of earth sciences. As of today the society has membership
of 400 geoscientists drawn from various central & state
government organisations and academic institutes spread all over
India
, with a few members from abroad. The society is celebrating its
silver jubilee year in 2005-06.
The society has been
publishing research papers in its journal titled “Gondwana
Geological Magazine” which is published twice in a year, in
January & July. As of today 28 such issues have been published.
Most significant contribution of the society has been the
publication of special volumes (full papers presented at the
national level seminars & symposia held by the society) which
have received wide acclaim. These include (1) Gondwana of India
(1993) (2) Deccan Flood Basalts of India. (1996)
(3) Quaternary Of India (1999) (4) Minerals & ground
water resources of Vidarbha (1996) (5)Seismicity of central India
(2002) (6) Recent Developments in Indian Micropaleontology (2003)
(7) Indian Non- Marine Late Cretaceous – Advances & Challenges
(2005) besides in collaboration with UNISCO special publication
titled “Control of Florosis” was brought out in 1998.
This society is headed
by President Dr. P.M. Tapaswi, Professor of Geology,
Department of Geology, Nagpur University,
